Launch: A Summary of the Kick-off Meeting of the National Commission on Innovation and Competitiveness Frontiers

As Americans enter the third decade of the 21st century, a new urgency faces the nation. While the United States has stood apart from the rest of the world during the past half century in its record of sustained innovation, the nation today faces new realities and new imperatives.

In response, the Council's "National Commission on Innovation & Competitiveness Frontiers" launched on August 7, 2019 an ambitious, multi-year effort to overcome competitiveness challenges confronting the nation; leverage distinctive assets and opportunities in the United States for productivity and prosperity gains; and support a new wave of U.S. innovators.

During this kick-off event - and highlighted in LAUNCH - the Commissioners set forth their Year 1 strategy, charging a community of advisors and working group leaders to develop actionable policy recommendations across three interconnected pillars:

• Developing and Deploying at Scale Disruptive Technologies in the United States;
• Exploring the Future of Sustainable Production and Consumption, and Work; and
• Optimizing the Environment for the National Innovation System.
